Privacy or Utility: How do people perceive new big data technologies?

The rise in automation has led to moral and ethical challenges surrounding technology. New technology like real-time surveillance to prevent crime or driverless cars can benefit people but they can also produce situations that are potentially unfair or harmful to the population. For example, the use of real-time surveillance to map high-risk crime zones can help lower crime rates but at the same time also violate peoples' privacy. In such morally ambiguous situations, some individuals may focus on the benefits and support the use of surveillance to prevent crime while others may focus on the risks and feel strongly against privacy violations. I will discuss to what extent these technologies incite moral concerns among people and what moral values make some people strongly support or oppose these technologies.
